The serve initiates every rally. It must be underhand, diagonal, and behind the baseline. Mastering legal serve mechanics is fundamental.

The most unique rule in pickleball. Both the serve return AND the third shot must bounce before being played. This prevents serve-and-volley dominance.

The 7-foot zone on each side of the net where volleys are forbidden. The kitchen is what makes pickleball a game of touch and strategy, not just power.

Pickleball uses side-out scoring in recreational and most competitive play. Only the serving team can score points.

A fault ends the rally. If the serving team commits a fault, it's a side-out (or loss of serve). If the receiving team faults, the serving team scores a point.

Line calls in recreational play are made by the team on the side where the ball lands. Good sportsmanship and the benefit of the doubt are core principles.
