How Pickleball Scoring Works
In professional pickleball, games are played to 11 points — you must win by 2. Most pro matches are best-of-3 games. In traditional doubles, a unique three-number scoring system tracks the serving team's score, receiving team's score, and server number (1 or 2). That's why you'll hear calls like "4-7-2" on court.
Major League Pickleball (MLP) uses rally scoring to 21 in a team-based format. Every rally scores a point regardless of who served. When teams split the first two games, a Dreambreaker tiebreak decides the match — a singles game to 21 where each team's players alternate every 4 points.
Singles scoring is simpler: just two numbers (server's score, then receiver's score). The server switches sides after each point they score, serving from the right when their score is even and from the left when odd.
